TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN
Unemployment — or funemployment, as I like to call it — definitely has its ups and downs. Ups include: making my own schedule, watching tv in the middle of the day, squeezing in workouts whenever, getting to road trip with my boyfriend, etc. Downs include: constant stress and self doubt, endless applications, writing fatigue, lots of crying, etc. I’m trying to be grateful and make the most of these days, but I can’t say it doesn’t suck.
As most recruiting goes, you’re usually asked to do a few rounds of interviews and an exercise or two. Now I’m not talking a new IGTV sculpt series but rather something that really gets those creative juices flowing. For a job I applied to a few months ago, I did the usual stages which included a final exercise this company dubbed a “Declaration of Creative Intent.”
Trust me, I was just as lost about what this meant as you probably are reading it. I got this assignment on a Friday afternoon right before heading out to a weekend in the mountains with my boyfriend and was asked to turn it around by EOD the following Tuesday. That weekend, I actually didn’t stress at all about it, and even on Monday morning, I had no plan and still no stress. My boyfriend asked me what I was thinking about doing, to which I responded that I wasn’t really sure but then gave a loose plan.
I wrote a letter and recorded myself reading it (a lot of times). I placed the audio over a 5-minute montage of personal clips and videos. My letter addresses my definition of creativity. It also looks at how I use creativity and apply it to my world. This resulted in a final Declaration of Creative Intent, which I titled To Whom It May Concern.
I don’t usually publish or share recruiting exercises, but this one felt different. I also feel it was a good exercise for me to do, personally. I’m choosing to share it to showcase my work but also give others a different look into my mind and creativity. Also, I didn’t think a lil self promotion would hurt. *shoulder shrug*
I present to you my Declaration of Creative Intent, To Whom It May Concern.
